Welcome to Ibaraki Prefecture

Introduction to Ibaraki

Ibaraki Prefecture is located in the northeastern part of the Kanto region, which roughly occupies the central area of the Japan archipelago. The distance of the prefecture to the nation's capital, Tokyo, ranges from 30 to 150km (100km from Mito, the prefectural capital), while the distance from Narita Airport, Japan's international gateway, to Tsukuba Science City is 40km. Ibaraki, which comprises an area of 6,094km2, ranks in size 24th out of 47 prefectures (the total area of Japan is 370,000km2). However, thanks to its abundant flatlands, it ranks fourth in terms of habitable area.

The eastern part of the prefecture boasts a Pacific coastline of approximately 180km. The waters off Ibaraki are renowned throughout the fishing trade, due in large part to the confluence of the warm Kuroshio and the colder Oyashio currents.

Northern Ibaraki has, in addition to a richly varied coastline, a number of scenic rivers such as the Kuji and Naka. Ranges of mountains and hills weave through the area, making it prime territory for a forestry industry that provides essential materials and employment. At the center of the prefecture, leading southwest, you will find the vast and fertile plains that maintain this region's tie to Kanto culture. Traditionally a prosperous grain growing area and home to plains thick with forests, central Ibaraki is also home to rivers such as the Tone and Kinu, along with magnificent Lake Kasumigaura, the second largest lake in Japan.
